THE AUDACITY are a 5 piece rock band from Tunbridge Wells and London who gig across the south-east region. The band’s sound can be heard as a mixing of the rough-edged sound of bands such as Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines and Pigeon Detectives with the more widescreen sounds of U2 and the pop sensibilities of bands such as The Kooks. Other influences include Klaxons, Stereophonics, and Enter Shikari, amongst many others. Live, the band focus on connecting with the audience and ensuring they have a happy and energetic time and through this, have built up a considerable fan base throughout the South London, Kent and Sussex areas, as well as further afield.
Lead singer JACK AISHER’s wide ranging vocals are a powerful force to be reckoned with, both live and on record, harking back to his classically trained voice. His catchy, introspective lyrics can be seen being sung along to by a crowd who connect with what he has to say. Guitarist JAKE STROUD shuns a high use of traditional rock-music ideas, attempting to be original, avoiding stereotypes, and still managing to be accessible at the same time. His influences come from all genres, especially classical, jazz, dance and all forms of rock. Fellow guitarist JOSHUA STROUD mixes his brother’s style with a more radio-friendly sound, drawing on influences from mainstream rock and pop. STEEN REED backs this impressive lead section with a grounded bass part, and enjoys mixing a contemporary bass playing style with slap bass and funk influences. BEN HARRIS finishes the line-up with his hard-hitting style that both complements the guitars and bass, but also adds a new dimension to the music, leading the rhythm of the guitars and bass. Ben’s style is influenced by rock, dance and jazz.
The band started in mid-2006, and started playing at the TUNBRIDGE WELLS FORUM venue, where the band entered the battle of the bands competition called “The Stable” for the 2006-2007 season. The band also managed to secure support slots during this period with major touring bands such as THE DYKEENIES and also achieved their first headlining slot at a charity concert at the beginning of 2007. As 2007 went on, the band’s success continued, securing 2nd place at the Tunbridge Wells Rock Festival in March of that year. During the summer, the band were taken-up by the clothing company Jack Wills, who used the band’s song “Trip Wire” [with Jake on lead vocals] for their spring advertising video, which was played in shops and accessible online. The band also played a slot at after-party of the 2007 Jack Wills Varsity Polo Match in the illustrious Guards Club venue in Windsor. The band were featured as the company’s band of the moment for most of 2007.
During the year the band’s fan base increased, and the band progressed through the “Stable” competition with increasing support, reaching the finals in July. The band then went on to win, securing an almost 80 vote majority over second place. The band then ended the summer headlining the forum on the coveted Saturday night slot, and cutting some tracks at the “Field Studios”, complementing the earlier recorded tracks cut at “Low-Tek” studios in Crowborough. The band now look forward to increasing their gigging range, and making new fans in new areas as well as recording some new material, as songs are constantly being written. 2008 should prove to be a very successful year for the band!
