Over the course of about ten years Michael has moved from written poetry to rap performance to a combination of written and spoken word.
A local boy, he recorded and toured with Midlands Hip Hop collective Deprogrammed whilst studying undergraduate English at Nottingham Trent University. He went on to study postgraduate Creative Writing at Trent, and just scraped a distinction for his poetry dissertation under Mahendra Solanki.
In 2008 Michael released two collections, Being that person and This side of poetry, through Time Travel Opportunists – an East Midlands based publishing collective. That year saw him resume gigging in Derby, Nottingham and Leicester, and he was even taken down to London by Apples & Snakes to support Ty.
Michael has led a handful of workshops on poetry and creative writing, and is a member of East Midlands literature development organisation Hello Hubmarine. Having recently returned to the region after a 14-month hiatus, Michael has resumed performing in the local area and is plotting the release of another collection of poetry.
In writing poetry, Michael takes influence from Rap figures such as Tupac Shakur, Atmosphere and Slick Rick, alongside inspirational poets such as Adrian Mitchell, Michael Rosen, Taylor Mali and Rives.
Michael enjoys eating cheese and Party Rings, and wishes he were a superhero.

Artist Profile

How would you describe your sound and what are some of your influences?
This sound takes a lot of influence from a variety of spoken word artists, rap artists, musical influences and other writers of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. The largest influences or inspirations are Rives, Taylor Mali, Gil Scott Heron, John Cooper Clarke, Beau Sia, Slick Rick, Tupac Shakur, Rudyard Kipling, Tim O\'Brien and Stephen Fry. At present the sound is largely acoustic, melodic strings accompanying spoken word; there is also a bit of piano and some hip hop beats in there too, but the future direction will hopefully be a little more orchestral or at least more inclusive instrumentals with the poetry.
Who would you like to support?
Rives, John Cooper Clarke, Eddie Izzard.
What’s your favourite album this year?
Emphemetry - Lullaby hum for tired streets.
What can people expect when coming to your gig?
Laughter and tears, a genuine pleasant surprise in terms of what to expect from spoken word. A bit of a journey, a bit of a rant, a lot of fun. You might even get fed some cheese or Party Rings.
Give me 5 reasons why people should come and see you live?
It\'s fun and entertaining - simple but effective. It will change your mind about what poetry can be. You\'ll be inspired! Most of the time you\'ll have the opportunity to have a go yourself if you want to. You can mix with the quality people that come to my gigs.
What's on your rider? (What do you demand for doing a gig)
If the organiser has money, then enough money to make it worth it. If the organiser has no money then I don\'t mind going a little out of pocket.
